Impact windows use laminated glass bonded to a tough interlayer and set in a reinforced frame, so the glass may crack but stays in the opening when debris hits. In Cape Coral they satisfy the code for protecting replaced openings without shutters, and a standard-size unit typically runs $900–$1,800 installed.

How impact glass works
Ordinary glass shatters and leaves a hole. Once wind gets inside a house, pressure builds under the roof and the damage multiplies. Impact glass is two or more layers bonded to a plastic interlayer. When something hits it, the outer pane can crack, but the interlayer holds the pieces together and the frame keeps the whole panel anchored. The opening stays closed.
Every unit we install carries a Florida Product Approval (or a Miami-Dade NOA) listing the pressures and impact tests it passed. The city checks those approvals at permit time, so the window on your wall matches what was filed.
Hurricane windows: the same product, sized for your house
“Hurricane windows” is what most people call impact windows, and we use the terms interchangeably. What changes from house to house is the design pressure: the wind load each opening must resist, worked out from the building’s height, exposure and where the window sits on the wall. Corner windows and tall openings facing open water carry higher numbers than a small bathroom window on a sheltered side.
The Florida Building Code also uses a “large missile” test for glazing within 30 feet of the ground, which covers nearly every window on a single-story Cape home. We match each window to its required rating rather than pricing the whole house at the worst case, which keeps the quote honest.
What you get beyond storm protection
- No shutters to hang. No panels in the garage, no ladder in August, no rush when a cone shifts toward Lee County.
- Insurance paperwork. A wind-mitigation inspector records opening protection, and Florida insurers must offer credits for it. We hand you the product approvals and permit record for that inspection.
- Quieter rooms. Laminated glass cuts boat motors, lawn crews and traffic noticeably.
- Security. The interlayer resists a thrown rock or a forced entry far longer than plain glass.
- UV and heat. The interlayer blocks most UV, and Low-E coatings cut the afternoon heat load on west walls.
Doing the whole house or a few openings
Protection is only as good as the weakest opening. A house with impact windows and an old slider still has a weak point, and the wind-mitigation form records the lowest-rated opening. That is why we usually quote the sliders and front door alongside the windows, even if you phase the work. See sliding glass doors and entry and French doors.
Impact window prices
| Item | Estimated price | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Single-hung or horizontal roller | $900–$1,800 | Size, frame, tint or Low-E |
| Casement or awning | $1,100–$2,200 | Hardware, opening size |
| Picture window | $1,200–$3,000 | Glass area, design pressure |
| Arched or custom shape | $1,800–$4,500 | Shape template, fabrication |
| Whole house, 15–20 openings | $16,000–$38,000 | Slider count, mix of styles |
Treat these figures as planning numbers for Lee County homes outside the high-velocity hurricane zone; they come from regional price data, not a measured quote. Your written quote replaces them line for line, and the price guide covers what moves them.
Impact window questions
Are impact windows worth it in Cape Coral?
For most owners, yes. They protect the house when nobody is home, remove the shutter routine, and count toward wind-mitigation credits. The cost is higher up front than standard windows plus shutters.
Do impact windows ever break?
The outer pane can crack under a hard hit, but the laminated layer holds and the opening stays closed. A cracked impact pane is replaced as a repair.
Is there a difference between impact and hurricane windows?
Not in the product. Both names describe laminated, tested windows. What differs is the rating each opening needs, which we set from your home’s design pressures.
Do I still need shutters with impact windows?
No. Approved impact glazing is itself the protection. Many owners sell or recycle their old panels after the final inspection.
